On a scale of 1-10 how hard is it to replace the impeller. Was testing motor in garbage can, started and stopped it about 5 times, was peeing the first 4 times but the fifth time I noticed it stopped. How would I check if its just dirt in the intake or filter screen? And should I replace the impeller at this time? Have no ideal how old the current one is. Any other suggestions and tips highly appreciated. I did change the starter recoil spring with some great photos from a member, if anyone has as a blow by blow on replacing the impeller that would be great. I do have a Clymer Johnson Shop Manual but not real impressed with it. Thanking all replys in advance

If you dont know how old the impellor is you need to change it, it's not hard to do. Those motors need to have the lower unit submerged fairly deep in order for the pump to work. Is it possible that on the 5th start up you didnt have as much water left in the can as on the 1st start up?

A BIG "THANK YOU" to raczekp1 for his step by step. With his help it turned out to be a 3 for me without, probably 5/6, especially the put back together tips. Not sure how old it was, but after I replaced it, unit was peeing like a race horse, so I guess it needed one. When I went to local dealer he suggested replacing the cast impeller housing with a new plastic with stainles steel cup, but turned out didn't have one in stock. Did a wet emery cloth cleaning on the old one and seemed to clean up pretty well. AEROCOOK, thought I had enough water in the can, but you could be right, it was blowing air out of the pee hole, anyway I ended up learning something today. Again thanks to this board I saved a few bucks (Dealer had a $100 per hr labor cost posted in his store)

For those who are not familiar with my LeeRoy's Ramblings, a year ago I moved them from the Puget Sound Anglers hosting site to my own website Welcome to LeeRoy's Ramblings

Here I have many articles from fishing, hunting, gun repair & of course my many outboard repair articles. Just scroll down to which suits your fancy. Thanks to all on this board who do recommend them to those who are not familiar to them. I am not the expert, nor a marine mechanic, but have documented many things (they started so I would not forget) that I have encountered for over 50 years.
