Gonna get my moneys worth from this forum yet!!

Thinking I should replace the impeller on my 88 Evinrude. Bought it used and believe it sat for a couple of years. I do have a good stream out the overboard but not real strong.

In a search on this forum I saw a reference to a Step by Step guide on impeller replacement, but the link did not work. Anyone have a good link or reference to the article. Actually there may have been a couple of articles..

Thanx,

If the engine sat for a while, yes, replace the impeller. Look into the carb as well. These 9.9/15's will serve you well if you take care of them. I get a "boat load" in my shop every year and am always amazed at the abuse these engines can take and still run.

If the FAQ section isn't up yet...I think it is....let me know and I'll see if I can get some help to you. Look for the article on 9.9/15's by the Machinist. That is one good article.

FAQ section is still down. Can anybody provide a link to the one Rayland was referring to or the ones I saw?
Thanx.

Here is a link for a Mercury. May give you some good general info.

Replaced it this w/e. Wasn't too hard once I figured how to get the pin back in place. Tried to get that little sucker to slide back under the impeller core for 15 minutes, ready to give up and presto, it popped right in! Go figure. Haven't tested it yet as I had also replaced the transom boards and need to wait for the paint to dry. Have a motor stand (homemade) but don't quite trust it for a running motor yet.. Will post results here. Thanks again to all!

Re: Impeller Replacement for 88 15 hp Evinrude

Ran it on muffs last night and looks good. I know this is not a 'real' test, but I could see the overboard stream increase with throttle, so I am confident that it will be well. The old impeller was definetely distorted and warped. Glad I replaced it. Guess all you 'old timers' are right: if it has set for a couple of years (yes) and/or is old (most likely) or has been run w/o water (I confess, but only for 5 minutes while starving the fuel lines out, honest! (what a maroon!)) then replace it. Only took about 45 minutes, was not that hard, and is nice to look inside the lower end and see what may be growing in there. I was actually suprised at how clean it was, looked almost showroom!

If it acts differently on the lake I will add to this post, otherwise consider this a done deal.

Thanks again to all for your guidance and hand holding!
