My stern drive is a volvo 270, how does one go about replacing the impeller? I am sure you have to drain the oil from the drive, what type goes back in it. I have never done this before.

Thanks

Re: impeller replacement question

Volvo drives don't have impellers or raw water pumps in the drive. They are engine mounted. Depends on what engine it is as to where it's mounted.

There are many issues that can cause overheating. When is yours overheating, always or just on plane? The raw water impeller should be somewhere on the front of the motor, it is a simple process, look in your manual. When you replace it, spend the extra $$ and buy an OEM. I find the VP impeller works better than aftermarket.

Have a great day,

Re: impeller replacement question

Well i have been tracing the water circuit, i hooked a hose up to the pump and it goes under pressure but not through the motor, nothing coming out of the exhaust. Even cold does the thermostat have a bypass like a car? Or is the tstat stopping the flow?

Thanks

Re: impeller replacement question

Your engine needs to be running for water to come out of the exhaust. The impeller blocks the water ports and will not allow water through when the engine is not running. When running the engine on muffs, I also plug the 1/2 inch hole on the bottom of the drive. If I am correct your engine is fresh water cooled and the raw water does not enter the engine. It goes through a heat exchanger which cools the engine coolant.

Have a great day,

Rob.
