impeller replacement

Hi, it's time to replace my impellar. 2006 Merc 115hp 4 stroke. how hard is it? are there any wires to disconnect when removing the lower unit? would rather do it myself and not take it to the shop. thanks in advance

It should not be very hard to replace it yourself. I recommend an OEM Service Manual to make it easy. Read the procedure, and then take the book outside and read it again, looking at the motor. After that you should be ready to start.

Remember to remove the speedometer line before dropping it as it is a pain if it,s loose and you have to try to disconnect it at that point. Be sure to get all bolts loose as on some engines there is one hidden under the trim tab. Do not force it or pry at it. Some do get stuck but be sure again all fasteners are taken off. If a problem arises post the issue here and someone can help you out. Keep the throttle and the LU in the same gear when removing and replacing the LU. They must go back the same way they came off for shifting purposes. If when replacing the LU it seems stuck and won,t go all the way up gently turn the flywheel to get the splines lined up and make sure the shift shaft is in it,s proper position. Same for the water tube.

As you loosen the nuts do not remove them totally in case the gear case releases all of a sudden it may drop quickly so you want them still on but loose to keep it from dropping out of control. If you have used it in salt water it may not want to come loose but do not despair you will be able to get it off. I waited too long to change my impeller. The impeller was still ok but the gear case was really stuck.

Go slowly and carefully. Get a Service Manual. Once you get into the actual impeller be very slow and cautious ...note the direction of the vanes before you disassemble. Watch you don't lose the little shaft key. Make a post if in doubt about anything !
