thanks for the help on my previous post ,is it normal to have to bend the top of the rubber blades on the impeller in order for the impeller to fit in the top of the pump housing?it doesnt make any sense all i can see that type of fit doing is wearing out the impeller fast and as the tops wear off sending debris into the cooling system

Re: impeller size

Yes, the blades have to be bent to fit inside the housing. I am no engineer, but I believe that the blades are bent so that there is sufficient tension on the blades against the housing as the impeller spins. The impeller is not in the direct center of the housing. The center of the impeller is offset somewhat so that the bend in the blades and volume between the blades change somewhat during a spin cycle forcing water through the pump. If the blades just spun inside the housing without the offset and change in bend, the water would not move through the pump. An impeller works differently that a fan blade or propeller, which have a pitch in the blades to move air/water. The impeller water pump design is quite clever in my opinion.

Re: impeller size

on my 86 merc 60hp i almost thought i was gonna shear the ends off the impeller forcing the new cap on. i made sure to put a little grease on everything to help her slide, and turn the drive shaft clockwise if its a similar motor while you push the housing over the impeller, that makes it a little easier. clockwise looking down from where the motor would be.
