I have a 2004 Johnson 40 hp 2 stroke outboard. looking to get a water pump kit, I did some research and found the some impellers have at least 5 tines , this particular one I found on line has only 3 tines .I do have a seloc manual and the pic shows 6 tines...probably a general description . 3 tines seems odd in my opinion .

Re: impeller water pump kit

From what I can tell, the OEM, Sierra and Mallory kits all show a three bladed impeller.

I come up with 6 blades

Re: impeller water pump kit

is there a kit for that impeller? is there a difference in water push between 3 to a 6 blade? or is there no difference.

Just looked up the kit and it shows 3 blades, so it is either a picture thing. I would say if it was designed for your motor 3 or 6 blades will work. Below is a link to the kits, find your hp and year (1999-up) and select the brand

For future reference if you see you self performing regular maintenance or repair work I would suggest an OEM manual. These Seloc & Climer manuals are to generic and don't provide model specific details and instructions. I got my OEM service manual from outboardbooksdotcom, which are provided by Ken Cook Manuals, which I am told now provides the OMC OEM manuals. Sometimes you can get lucky and find them on ebay as well.

Based on info from over on the Chrysler/Force section, fewer vanes is better (pushes a larger volume of water), so should probably go with the 3-vane impeller if there is a choice for your model. I've used both, depending what the make and model calls for, and don't see a practical difference. I was seeing 10(?) vane impellers when I was recently looking for an impeller for a 10 hp Chrysler I was working on (Ebay, I think, or one of the NAPA marine parts catalogs).

The 3 blade will push less water than the 6 blade but will work in that 40 HP for an engine temp issue at idle.

Re: impeller water pump kit

Only what I've experienced. Back in the mid 90's OMC tried the 3 blade in their 3 cylinder motors and found they would overheat. They went back to the 6 blade and it cured the problem. The OMC Cobra stern drives were running to COLD with the 6 blade so they went to a 3 blade to get them to run WARMER so they wouldn't make oil. That's from experience.

Thanks, boobie. interesting history. not a good idea on most bigger motors, so by implication not a good idea on the smaller ones if there is an option.
