A newbie question. My boat is an 1988 so i guess it's an alpha 1 outdrive(can't read any numbers on it). I was wondering if my impeller and water pump were bad if any water would get up to the heat exchager and out exhaust? End of last year (boat new to me) i ran it on muffs and water came out. i put the muffs on and started today for the first time and no water came out. it ran for 30 seconds tops. i came in and ordered the replacement kit for pump/impeller. i wanted to make sure i was barking up the right tree for no water. Don't know what could have happened over the winter it was covered and outdrive down the whole way. Going to try to get a pressure test on it this weekend. boat is a 1988 marathon 21', 3.7L 165hp merc 460:confused:

The impeller would be a good idea to replace anyways. Maybe someting got in and made a nest inside

Now thats one i have yet to come across !

If the water pump is questionable yes changing it out cant hurt ..

But are we guessing 30 sec -maybe less or more ?
Some will get the water up there a lil quicker than others a few more seconds woudnt hurt , if all was empty and this is the first fire .

I started it and walked back, looked down saw no water coming out took one leap and turned it off. I was scared it would overheat alot of threads say these 470's do it easily.

Just for peace of mind back flush it from the water pump hose that insert into water pump, just to make sure that theirs no blockage. If clear replace impeller, and check the rest of the route if clear should work fine. if still no water out of the exhaust check to see if you installed the water pump same same. (2in left or right it wont work)
