Impeller won't come off!

I've got a '64 Merc 60 6hp. I've had the motor a year and a half. Ordered a new impeller because the old one fell apart. I took the water pump top cover off and pulled out 5 pieces of the impeller, just the rubber pieces. The metal base of the old impeller is stuck to the driveshaft/impeller shaft. I thought the impeller just slides onto the shaft with ease and the key/pin holds it in place.
I've been soaking it in WD40. I locked vise grips to it and tied a rope to the vise grips. I put all of my weight onto it and it just won't budge. I've tried prying it out with screw drivers and I am now out of ideas. I guess I may have to completely get the drive shaft out of the lower unit. But I am not sure if I can do this if I cannot get the water pump housing out. I haven't seen any other posts with this problem. I need help.

Sometimes they get so corroded you have to cut them off the shaft. Usually a die grinder with cutting disk is the choice to do this with.

Try this Big Al1....

Useing a good sharp chiesel, find the key way and put the chiesel here. Straight up and down. One good smack usually is enough to losen or split the impeller brass hub. Waterbugto is right also. But sometimes getting a small grinder down in the impeller cup on Mercs is hard.

Jim

I stood my lower unit upright and used a hacksaw to cut a section of the old impeller off. Don't worry too much if you scratch the shaft a bit. Good Luck!

Re: Impeller won't come off!

I really appreciate the help. I took the strongest flat head screw driver I had and put the corner of the head in the key hole and wacked it one good time and it slide up a bit. It really took some force to slide that thing off. I think the WD40 penetrating for 3 days also helped. I guess this is why they say to change the things every year. The new one slide right on with ease. My old one had many visits to salt water and was just corroded.

Hi Big Al1...

If you havn't got it all back together yet, put a little grease around the shaft where the impeller rides. Dosn't hurt nothin' and may help on the next removal. Glad you gotter off.

Jim
