Re: impeller???????

Remove the propeller and the next thing you come to is the water pump. The impeller is properly called a "rotor". It also is affectionatly called a wobbler pump.

Re: impeller???????

For further info, it runs on an off center or cam like section of the shaft causing a plunger, which is part of a rubber disc you probably found to move back and forth to pump water. I have one of these motors. Runs great. This type pump doesn't give much trouble but if you want to be sure, they are available. I have seen them I think on acmeoutboards.com or americanoutboard.com.

A very common misconception, so don't feel bad. How it really works is that the rotor just touches one side of the housing and there is a space between the rotor and housing on the other side. If you watch the rotor as it wobbles, the space progresses from the intake side of the housing, around to the outlet side, then disappears, forcing water up through the water tube. Then the space reappears on the intake side, taking in another gulp of water to move around to the outlet again. The tab has nothing to do with it except to hold the rotor from spinning...and blocks the intake side off from the outlet side. This pic is for a Gale, but the Johnson works the same way..just different inlet location.
