Impeller?

Hi,

Changed my impeller this spring and had the boat out for the first time today. I kept an eye on the temp and it was at normal operating temp all day.

Get the boat home and hooked up the muff to flush the engine and the water was only coming out of the exaust by the propeller. Engine temp was climbing pretty high.

Any ideas?

Boat is a 2002 Stingray with a 3.0 in it.

Hi. If it was normal in the water, but overheating on the muffs, maybe you didn't have sufficient water flow from your hose?

Running fine all day long on its own and starts climbing when its on the muffs. Did you have sufficient city water pressure to cool the engine?

Lots of water from the hose, never had a problem running it on the muffs before. I wasn't floating and idling anytime. Would there be enough water flow/pressure from cruising to cool the engine?

Can you clarify that? I'm not understanding what you're saying:(

The idle relief ports at the bottom of the gimbal housing should have water coming out of them before coming out the prop.

Re: Impeller?

I'm thinking either a restriction or the engine water pump. Is there anything about where you boat which you could be bringing something into the engine which would settle in the block (mud, sand, zebra mussels)?

I boat in a salt water river that eventually turns to fresh. Nothing comes to mind regarding sand or mud.

Would the direction of the impeller blades make a difference? I questioned myself when I was doing the re assemle if I had them in there correctly. I put them so that when they where on the shaft they were pointing counter clockwise.

I don't understand why you are so concerned. You say it worked at normal temp all day, so I would say that the impeller replacement was done correctly:)
Take it out on the water again and see what happens. If temp stays in the normal range then everything is ok.

Ok, I'll take it out this weekend and see how we make out. Just wanted to make sure that I didn't have a problem before I got on the water.
