With the muffs and water on, engine off, quite a bit of the water is coming out where the lower meets the upper. There was no gasket and I'm assuming this would be normal?

This is not normal and your motor is not getting much if any water. There is a tube which connects the lower with the upper and has seals, somewhere these two are no connected together. Need to remove the drive and pull it back apart

yeah i remember lining that tube up. didn't notice and seals or o-rings in it. the first time i tried to put it on i was by myself and i knocked that tube out of the pump on the lower unit end so had to take it back down and push it back in. Seemed like it went in ok the 2nd time when i had help

Getting ready to tear into this tomorrow but is there a chance water was overflowing out between the upper and lower because I had the water turned up too high? from what i remember and have read there are no seals or o-rings on that tube on the alpha 1 gen 1?

how high should i have the water pressure when on muffs?

Ayuh,.... I use Full Blast,.... excess water is lost at the muffs themselves,.....

Update...Started it up a 2nd time on the muffs and got videos of everything but all seemed good. Put the boat in yesterday and ran it about 1/4 mile from the ramp to the slip. Probably 10 minutes total run time but everything seemed great and temp never went over about 140-150. Think it is supposed to rain today and tomorrow so not sure we will make it out but will keep an eye on it.

It could be that the muffs make water shoot up the sides of the drive and hit the cav plate making it look like water is coming out where the halves meet. Once you start the engine does most of the overspray go away?

Good point. Will have to watch the video again to see if I can see it. When it was running no water was coming out from there, only from the exhaust bellows area and a little at the prop.

Went out for a little cruise today. Probably went about 3 or 4 miles up and down river. Temps never went above about 155* and boat ran great so thinking everything is fine.

If you ran that long and everything was fine, job well done. 'Torn' bellows? Check to see if you have bellows or a tube. Some V8s in the era were supplied with a tube, and some people got lazy and replaced a bellows with a tube. Either way, nothing bad. And yes, there is no gasket between the drive shaft housing (upper) and the gear housing (lower), only the quad seal for the oil passage. If there are are any marks, imperfections, screwdriver gouges in the surfaces you get water coming out. Can't be helped and it's not a problem.

Anyway, sounds like you did a good job.

Thanks all. And thanks for the videos achris. I watched those a few times.

It is a bellows and not a tube. It comes out close to the transom. Bellows were replaced June 2015 and looked good. No water getting in and bilge is still dry so shaft and shift bellows must be good. I have seen several videos on muffs and seems about all of them blow water out where mine did.Similar to this one > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vga137ywg6M
