I have a 1989 Evinrude Tracker Pro Series 70. I just got it. I put ears on it, started, ran great, water working great...then I put the lower unit in a bucket of water covering the water inlets on both sides and no water flow and buzzer went off. Put ears back on it and it was fine. I did not apply very much water pressure through the hose at all... Any ideas what might be going on? According to previous owner, impeller replaced just last year and boat has been out about 2 times since with no problems.
Thanks,
Cal

Re: impeller?

In a bucket or barrel the water needs to be up above the joint where the L/U meets the mid-section. That's where the impellor is. An outboard impellor is not a self priming pump, although some of them in good shape can draft from the intakes. Some others can't. Once the water starts flowing thru the impellor the pump will ususlly be able to draft. Point being, you did not have the motor deep enough in the water and you most probably burned up the impellor because it is water lubricated and you were running it without water.
