How hard is it to replace the impeller on a Mariner 40hp motor. I have the tools and the place to do it, but I have never tried. What is the estimated cost of dealer to this, and it should I even try?

It's easy and a very common thing to do. I take it you've never sucked up a ski rope.

Im proud to say that I never have sucked up a ski rope.......lol.

I really have never seen one changed out, or have a clue where to start.

The first place to start is here. The best advice I can give you is to go get a Seloc Manual. It's worth every dollar. I know, I know, you really want somebody to walk you through it.

I am, this is the first step.

Re: Impellers

If you have done mechanica work, this is a piece of cake.
1. Remove the gear shift lever pin - it's under the carb;
2. Loosen the bolts holding the lower unit and carefully pull it down.
3. Once you have it done, take of the bolts of the water pump - they are round the driveshaft, pull up the water pump clean the residue of the gasket under the plate, inspect and replace the plate, then fit the impeller with the drive pin bending the impeller plates the wrong clockwise direction, when fitting the housing and do everything back.

Opposite to clockwise direction (I wrote wrong clockwise), my English stumbles a bit.
Haven't used for a time.

Just to augment Baiwan's procedure...

Inspect SS cup for scoring and replace as necessary.
Grease drive shaft splines and shifter splines before reassembly.

Don't get frustrated when it doesn't slide back together as easily as it drops out. Wiggle it up like you're choking someone.:)

Now I'm laughing at myself. For some reason I had jet on my mind when I responded. Too funny. Just follow the correct advice in the other posts and you'll have it done in no time. I guess you must have thought... How the heck do you suck a ski rope into an impeller? ... LOL...
