Yesterday,

Took my son out out to tour our lake. We had a great time and saw a bunch of wildlife and sites.

On the way back the lake was calm as glass so I opened up the motor (20H Yamaha) and for some reason we hit a wake that was not visible from before. There was some cavitation in the prop and the boat lurched forward.

I, my son and the boat contents were launched into the lake. The lanyard did its job and the were were OK.

I will always wear it now that I see how important it is, especially with the inflatable.

Re: Importance of the engine Lanyard

In my larger motorboat I never use it however, I now realize the error of my ways and will endevour to use it every time I go out. My Son is somewhat afraid of the water and i thought he would freak out. The water was warmer than I thought it would be and he handled it without any issues. He thought the whole ordeal was lots of fun :) Kind of reminds me that wearing a lifejacket is not optional even if one is a very strong swimmer and accidents can happen in a flash of a second.

Yes, definitely a lanyard, life vests and a kind of ladder for climbing back into the inflatable are must have. Luckyly you had the lanyar attached to, so the boat didn'y go that far away, imagine without a secure lanyard, probably will still be chasing the inflatable :D

Re: Importance of the engine Lanyard

Hi,

At this point I shudder to think what could have happened in the blink of an eye. I was thrown out too. The prop could have easily hit me spinning but it didn't this time and the kill switch is a vitaly important safety device.

I beg all of you to use it every time and wear you life Jackets every time. Don't just have them in the boat.

I have learned my lesson even though I was totally prepared. All the items did their job.

Please learn from my lesson.

Other issue, the boat may have circled both of you with engine on, didn't happened cause had the lanyard secured to you, t's also a must to have a spare lanyard or a piece of thick wire to wrap around kill switch in case the driver is thrown into the water, it's a good idea to have a second boater knowing how to reinstall the lanyard or wire to start engine back. Personally always maintain a thick wire wrapped around the gear shift lever as a spare to start engine back on just in case idriver s thrown out of sib.

Hi,

Yes I have thought of that too and put a spare lanyard in the safety kit. A piece of wire would do the job too.

Someone is making a lot of money charging $15 for a lanyard that is worth $1

Any idea where I can get lanyards cheap. I am going to attach one to my lifejacket.

In racing, my co-pilot have to have a lanyard of his own (part of the rules as a safety precaution) clipped onto his lifejacket, for incase I fall out the boat, otherwise he will have to paddle quite a distance to come and get me, if I am hurt, it could be even worse .....

Re: Importance of the engine Lanyard

Hi,

I live in Toronto, Canada. I have lived here for 23 years now and it seems that I am a Canadian to some extent.

The lakes here in Canada are absolutely and there are many lakes. We have a cottage in a large lake in Haliburton. My friend who has a place on the Vaal lives there now but he says the Vaal is polluted. He reverse osmosis filters all the water.

Cape Town is absolutely beautifull and I took my family for a holiday there about 3 years ago.

Cheers,

Darryl

Re: Importance of the engine Lanyard

I got tossed from my 3.4m Avon at about 20mph once. I kinda think I might have accidentally pulled the lanyard and that's what caused the boat to hook, but still... I always wear it.
When I surfaced the boat was gliding toward me, I was back in and under way in a few seconds.....

after I got back to the dock I realized I was still wearing my ball cap and kept my glasses on somehow....glad I didn't lose my $500 pair of specs...

I used to go through the motions with regard to lifejackets never believing that I would actually need it. I think the kill switch lanyard is just as important. I have learned an easy lesson.
