impossible to find voltage regulator

I'm looking for a voltage regulator for my 1963 evinrude Starflite 75 hp V4. The original is badly corroded but I can see some numbers. On the cover is "delco remy", and stamped into the regulator mount is "N 12v 589 4b". I've tried some local dealers, all to no avail. I have even tried all of the alternator shops in my area, but none of them could get the reg. I have been e-mailing all of the salvage yards that I can find online and still no luck. Any suggestions?

Say Yo.....If you can locate a automotive electrical shop in your area, the longer established, the better, you might be suprised what you might find. There is even a chance they can rebuild your old one. ...Bob in Calif...

Yorab,
Have you tried your local NAPA auto parts? They carry alot of the Johnson/Evinrude parts. I can get parts for my 1058 Johnson there most of the time. Including a voltage regulator. Take the old one with you just to make sure you get the right one tho.

Yorab..... I know the transistorized regulator of which you speak, but there are two types. One has the transistor seperate which attaches to the mounting surface. The other (which I have) has the transistor attached to the bottom of the regulator.

The numbers on the one I have are "12v 561 3A".

The OMC part number on the one I have is 378335.

I wasn't even aware that the 60's era Starflites or many other outboards HAD a regulator, or a charging cicuit of any kind.
But I'm fixin to find out (I just aquired an old Kekieffer outboard)

By the way joe, is the transistor a disc-shaped component that is attatched to the bottom of the regulator by two wires?

Re: impossible to find voltage regulator

All the regulator does is keep the voltage steady instead of fluctuating up and down with engine RPM's. In theory, any 12 volt voltage regulator should work, whether it be marine or auto.

John, although I haven't researched the option of using an auto reg thoroughly, I don't remember seeing any auto regs with only two connectors. That is what my reg has. A BAT connector and a F connector.

yorab
If you can supply me a schematic of your engine, I'm sure I can help you find a automotive regulator substitute ;)

Re: impossible to find voltage regulator

This old style chrysler reg should work fine. Just get a harness plug and regulator from the wreckers. This reg is transistorized and sealed from moisture.... :)
