Hi all,

I'm looking at a 15' aluminum boat with a low hour '97 Johnson oil injected 30hp outboard. The boat is rated for 40hp. I was wondering if this outboard has decent longevity, and more importantly, can its performance be improved somehow, through carb, prop change, dolefin or ?

Thanks!

Re: Improving performance on a '97 Johnson 30hp?

modifications can do more damage than good. getting the optimum boat and motor set up, will go a long way. proper load placement in the hull, don't be stern heavy. proper engine height to keel, the AV plate ( flat plate just above prop) should be 1-2 inches/ and inline with the keel of the boat. having the proper prop so that the motor turns it's correct rpms at WOT.

doing this will go along way toward getting to optimum performance, also the addition of smart tabs will help get on plane quicker, and maintain a slower planing speed.
