Just replaced forward and pinion gear in a 1980 Chrysler 115hp. Took out this weekend and when put in forward gear the boat will jerk as if the gear is popping in and out. This will happen every 4 seconds. It would idle in forward if you have at low throttle. The Clutch dog did not seem to be worn at all so that was not replaced. It will go in reverse and move without problem. Any suggestions on what it can be. The motor has ran wonderful until the piviot screw was removed. That was the reason for replaceing the gears. When we took the boat out of the water we put the shifter in forward gear and we can spin the prop by and and the shift rod will move up and down with a pop.

Re: in and out of gear

Hi,Joker.
Take a close look at the rubber donut inside the prop hub. It may have 'spun-out' meaning, it now is slipping. In the water, it would act like a slipping clutch. It would idle forward and reverse just fine, but when you give it ther juice, it will spin at the hub.
It will sometimes look normal ,other times deformed. But the prop can be turned, even if the spline is clamped down.

Those engines (and the newer Force motors), are notorious for that. Many Chrysler/Force guys keep a spare prop someplace on the boat.
