Schematic, Clanton, remember me? Just wanted to let you know my status. We're still waiting for the refund for the original engine we bought. They say it's on the way. I've taken the old block to a reputable rebuilder in Ft. Lauderdale who says he can rebuild it. Hopefully we'll be skiing by next summer. Will keep you posted.

Hi again....
so did you ever get a 'definite' on what caused the rebuilds to fail?

I was going to do a search to find old post,
I was still thinking about that engine. Would like to know what the problems were.

Re: In-board head-scratcher

The new rebuilder seems to really know his stuff. He raised a couple good questions. What do you all know about external oil coolers, and the oil travel path from the oil pump throughout the motor on a 351 Winsor? Specifically the lines (hoses). Could two connected backwards cause the problem we had (smoked rear main bearing...no other apparent damage)? When we took the engine out we left all the external oil cooler parts together (which were mounted to the engine mounts) to avoid any confusion on reassembly. When brain-storming with my new re-builder it appears it's possible two lines could have been crossed. It still seems to me that if there was any misconnected oil lines that any damage would have been generalized/throughout, not localized to one bearing.

I'm with you on that CFO94. I don't buy the hose issue.....Although the cooler may be more efficient in one direction, its certainly not destructive in the other...

Let,s not forget about the pressure relief valve that only works one way.Hoses installed wrong?Could be. Oil coolers are not a typical installation where I'm from but I can guess that an inproperly installed one could put you on the wrong side of that valve.

It really doesn't make any difference where the cooler is. The 351 (5.8) typically has the cooler attached to the oil filter housing and the filter attaches to it.

You mentioned 351 Windsor. Are you sure this is not a 351M or Modified?

Heyu Hondo

isn't the valve in the filter body, uneffected by hose orientation?
