In Board Or OutBoard Pro/ cons

Beginning to shop for a new boat. Loking for a suitable boat for a family of four plus dog.I haven't decided if I want to go for a out board engine or in board.Any suggestions. What are the pros and cons of each??? I currently have a 17' Sangster Tri Hull Bowrider ( 1970's) pushed along by a 1966 65hp Merc . ( I Know motor should be newwer than boat, but what can you do when you get it all including a trailer for a cool 1800 cdn) . Any input would be great

I'll check out that thread KCook. In the interum, I must chime in for outboards. After owning both, I will never ever have an I/O again. Just my opinion.

"Plus Dog" = Outboard<br /><br />Easier to pull up on a sandbar or a beach for, er, uhm, dog to go........<br /><br />Dog loved my 20' Lund, carpet on the bow made for nice jumpoff's to shore.

I use to think Inboards were the best because my Uncle's boats all had been inboards. <br /><br />But my friends first boat was an outboard, Mercury 70HP, it was so easy to work on. His second boat was an I/O with a Volvo Penta outdrive, parts were expensive and it took us a year to get the boat running right and then we burned up a piston, so he sold the boat and got another boat with an O/B.<br /><br />I like outboards for one main reason you can just transfer them from boat to boat so you can easily upgrade the boat. And outboards are much easier to work on, cost less to repair, or replace.<br /><br />Just my opinion.<br /><br />Chris

I agree with Chris. OB's are soooooo much lighter which helps all around, heheeee especially pushing it around in the garage.<br /><br />Jeff

my disclaimer...never owned an outboard. i've had i/o's and have an inboard now. talk about easy to work on, it's nothing but a chevy engine. there's no complicated gearing like in the outdrive of an i/o (unless you get a v-drive). the swim platform is a huge bonus for swimming and water sports. it's pretty easy to get a dog out of the water and onto the platform too. and, the prop is safely tucked away from arms and legs. <br /><br />but, your expensive running gear (prop shaft, prop, rudder) are under the boat and somewhat exposed. i can still beach on the shore or sandbars but i take a few extra mins to make sure everything will be safe. inboards also tend to use a bit more gas.

I've had a boat with a large outboard. The noise always seemed excessive for a pleasure boat. The inboard is much quieter. Also the initial cost of a large outboard is way more than you'd pay for an inboard of similiar horsepower.
