In line fuel filter on 50 HP Johnson

I have a 1972 50hp Johnson...I don't have any carb issues but just thinking of putting a cheap auto parts in line fuel filter before the carb for protection...has anyone done this and can recommend a certain filter?

The majority of the engines now have a fuel filter installed in the engine compartment BUT before the fuel pump.... a plastic type filter that can be easily cleaned, available at your dealership, possibly at this site.

Hey thanks Joe...by the way, I am having a hard time trying to locate my thermostat...do I have to remove the cylinder head cover to get to it?
