In-line fuel filter question

I have a 1997 Volvo-Penta 4.3GL (carb version). I recently tried checking and cleaning the small in-line fuel filter (the one located in the fuel line just before it goes into the carb). I got the filter out, but I thought there was supposed to be a small spring that goes in there too. Either I couldn't find the spring, or it fell out and I lost it. <br /><br />Will it matter if the spring is not in there? I pushed the filter back in the line and screwed it all back down.<br /><br />Thanks for your help!<br /><br />Jason
