Ok here it is in a nuts shell
my tilt doesnt work when I hit the down or up it clicks loudly
I checked the tilt shaft and its ok but tilt motor runs with the shaft removed
the clutch plates look great and clean the only thing I could see is the end cap that hold the tilt shaft is worn thru the brass could this be my problem??
and what kind of oil do I use to replace the oil I lost?

Dexron ATF works fine. Have you cleaned all the connections on the trim solenoids? Checked the 50 amp fuse?

Welcome aboard!!

Sounds like you have a stringer drive and you do not want to use ATF as the previous poster said.

Ok this is an 400-800 stinger 1985 3.8L
The brass I'm talking about is the end cap bushing for the tilt shaft and worm gear.

Been awhile since I owned a stringer. The one we had was the electric shift so it was Type C in the drive and OMC Hi-Vis in the tilt. You should be able to use 75w90 no problem in the tilt.

You have a manual? If not, you need to get one. It will say for sure in there.

Are you talking about teh oil in the tilt clutch housing? My manual says SAE 30 oil. By 'tilt shaft', do you mean the worm gear shaft? Does it turn with the worm gear out? You may habe a broken hammer blow coupling. I had to replace mine.

Mine leaked. A boat mechanic said that the design wasn't so great and even if you replace the seals it wouldn't be long before it starts to leak again. He told me to drain it (had water in it) and then pack it with marine grease. So I did this and ever since it has worked fine. I check the grease from time to time and its like it was the day I put it in.

Re: in need of a little help OMC tilt trouble

Use any ol oil you have laying around, it's going to be in the lake soon anyways. I packed mine with grease and some old oil kicking around. It's now about 2/3 grease, 2/5ths water, 1/5th oil...does that add to 1 yet? the spec is SAE motor oil as is stamped in right beside the level plug on the cover.

You shouldn't be able to see any clutch plates until you put the clutch assembly in a hydraulic press and disassemble it. If you are able to inspect the plates as you say, the whole thing has fallen apart.

My solution for weak tilt is to put 2 gaskets under the clutch cover, fille all the black gook off the relay threaded posts, terminals, and off the nuts and washers (people forget the current actually travels through the sides of the lock washer to the terminal), and of course you want to lube the pivot trunnions.

If the hammer blow coupling was gone, wouldn't the motor spin freely?
His is locked.

Most times you'd be right. Mine got jammed up by a piece of the broken coupling and wouldn't turn. Just trying to throw out some possibilities.

I hadn't heard of packing the worm gear housing with grease however. I may try that if I have to pull it apart again. Once again by trying to help someone else, I learn something myself! I love this place! :D

Re: in need of a little help OMC tilt trouble

use motor oil in housing...sounds like a reseal is in order also...as far as the motor running with no load, but will not run with assembly together...there are a few possible problems...i will list a few: bad or poor connections, clean and check all connections including ground....may be a weak motor, probably caused by water intrusion, if you had water in clutch housing, then it probably made its way to the motor....after checking all connections and it still doesnt work, try removing motor and test it per service manual, or you may be able to dissassemble it and clean it up.....do you have a service manual????? if not, get one. you'll need it anyway..........as far as packing housing with grease as a previous post suggested...not a good idea, its only a patch...and with leaking seals you will still have water intrusion which WILL make its way to the motor.......this isnt the best designed tilt system, but with some maintenence, it will work just fine
