I guess that depends somewhat on what you go by. The blue book value is far less, but it's still not a bad price for a 90. The first thing I'd do is make sure the controls come with it. If it's a motor with controls then I'd consider it. I would probably offer them a bit less since you have to buy carb kits. Even if you don't, it's not a bad deal. Keep in mind you're looking at about $30 per carb kit according to Crowley Marine.

She doesn't look bad on the outside the question is what does she look like under the cowl. If she isn't seized and the controls and wiring are with it then it is most likely a fair deal. I would look at ditching the VRO since it is an 85 and going to premix.

He's not, he's looking into a motor and wants our input.

Myself, I would do a compression test on it and make sure all cylinders are even on the readings and make sure there is no water in the gearcase oil. It doesn't look like too bad of a motor. I would offer 500 and see what he says

Compression check, compression check, compression check. If compression comes back low, nothing else matters....unless you want a parts motor.

Thanks guys. Hidef , I offered 500 and he took 550. Oh well, saved 50 bucks! I'm meeting him Wed and I'm taking my compression gauge. I will do all cylinders. Anything else I should look for? Again thank-you!

look for signs of the block being split, If it's been split, Run away.

look it over really well. Some sellers are honest...others are just plain criminal. Odd that they'd rather buy another motor than rebuild carbs.

It is possible that that's all that's wrong with the motor, just make sure to check it out thoroughly.

Ouch, you gave him cash before you did the compression test? Hmmmm not too good of a move, but I hope all works out okay. It looks like a decent motor, though, so you'll probably get lucky. Just make sure you check the gear oil too.

Got her home! I checked the compression and I got 90 on 3 cylinders and 105 on the other...
Is this normal?

Did you check the oil in the lower unit? For things like metal shavings and water? That's all things you should check considering that could turn into some pretty costly repairs.

It should run with those numbers, get it running and do a good decarb and see if the numbers don't come up.

I've seen that on a motor before, accually it was 120 on the 3 and 160 on the 4th one, the high one was the one that the fuel pump was driven from, and it was leaking fuel into that cylinder. After a rebuild on the fuel pump, and a serious decarb, the comp numbers were 125-127 on all 4. I figured that the high cylinder had a bunch of carbon, and was wetter and gave a high reading, that was 10 years ago and that 1981 90hp evinrude is still going strong.

What is considered low? 90 psi seems low to me when you see 125-135 numbers...
