In your experience whats best 9.9 2stroke

Just wanna know what you think. I have a zoom 285 with a 8hp max rating. Or 88lbs on the transom. I know I should not overpower but... Anyhow 2 strokes are much lighter so lets hear what experiences you have with 8-9.9 2 strokes. My experience is only with an 06 honda 40hp 4stroke and an 03 yamaha 2.5hp 4stroke. Thanks for weighin in

I think my avatar says it all.

I've also used Yamaha, Mercury and Nissan in comparable hp.

Best in my opinion is the Johnson / Evinrude, however I advise you to stick within your rated HP.

i love my 1952 johnson 10 HP supper light @58 pounds in 1952 the ad for johnson says johnson for dependability and 59 years later myns still strong with over 4000 hours on it now thats a truthful ad.you could get a older OMC 2 stroke 25 hp(82 pound) and still be under your max transom weight. but stick within your rated HP *wink* but it depends on what you want do you want speed power and reliability (2 stroke) or a fuel efficient clean (4 stroke)

You should stick to the rated horsepower. That said the ol evinrude and johnson 6 horse motors are easy to find and pretty reliable. I looked at a boat once that had a Mercury that I think was a 7.5, might have been a 7. Don't know much about it. It ran good but I didn't like the boat so I didn't buy it.

A JohnnyRude 6-8hp is the correct engine for your boat. They are among the best small outboards ever made. Overpowering a tiny boat is not smart.

Well i'm not so sure I would go less than an 8hp. I am slightly an adrenaline junky and all I own are yamaha dirt bikes so I know that company for its 2stroke. I like to scare myself a bit allthough i would keep it 9.9 or under. Now my father-in-law has an evenrude 8hp 2stroke that i could pick up is there any way to pump up the ponnies on these guys? Thanks for everyones responses !!

Its not like I wanted a 15 or 20 hp on that boat. You call yourself a mod and you respond like that. Way to set an example. Rollerblading on the interstate... they are called highways up here.

people on this site will go crazy on you if you get a 10 hp and your boat is rated for a 9.9

Just making a point, Yamadirt.

The reason boat makers rate their boats for MAX hp is that they consider it unsafe to exceed that HP.
