inboard trannsmison ID ? how to

i have a 1977 trojan F280 28' fbmy w/ twin 351 fords. how do i tell what tranny types i have. ?

if i wanted to replace these engines with something else, how would i know what would bolt to the trannys?

Look for tags on the tranny itself. Is it Merc, Volvo?
Pictures would be a good start.

ok, i dont have engine room pics, but i know the motors are backwards( facing back of boat) and the tranny angles down and the prop/ drive shaft goes down and back under the engine....

kinda like this pic. ive heard the term V-DRIVE, is this a type of tranny or a brand name?

all i ever owned b4 was outboards.....

In the picture below, the V drive is seperate from the tranny noted by the black line. The V drive is given to the part of the drive that changes direction (See the Red V)
The transmission is circled in yellow and is a Borgwarner Velvet drive transmission.
