I wouldn't mess with it... it's IMHO perfect now and well within the specs of your hitch... you still have nearly a 30% margin

Re: Increase trailer tongue weight on trailer

Well, dropped pontoon off at the lake, and took it to friend's house. see:(We all do dumb things, don't we?), post. I replaced bunks, and elevated them about 1 1/2" because they were lying on fenders, and could not lower fenders. I did move axles back 16". Picked up pontoon week later, and discovered it had a small pinhole leak where front cone joined rest of toon. Nothing serious; can fix that. Weighed the tongue, and it came out to be 265#, With estimated total weight of 2400# for trailer, and pontoon with motor, and furniture up front. Probably about 11-12%. Don't really like that much, because that is pretty much unloaded, and the type of hitch I have is 350# max. Might move it back towards the front, about 4", and bring it closer to 8-10%. Any thoughts?

Moving it forward will increase the weight. If you want less move it farther back

How is your boat loaded and how much fuel? Do you have the Battery/s there also. Any weight you add behind the axles will decrease the tongue weight. ON the other hand... Any in front will increase it as well.

Take into consideration all the load it will normally travel with.

Got any more pics? Tongue did look too far forward in original pic.

Re: Increase trailer tongue weight on trailer

Thalasso, I initially moved it back 16", and increased tongue weight from about 20#, to about 265#. The thought is to move it 4" closer to the front to decrease it just a little. I have a Pull-rite travel trailer hitch, that changes the pivot point of the trailer from the back of the truck, to just behind rear axle, with the extended tongue riding on a 170 degree radius track. It is essentially an under the chassis fifth wheel. It has a towing capacity of 20,000#, and 2000# tongue weight. When I use it for a regular hitch, it locks into place on track. In that mode, it is rated for 350#. Leaving it as it is would not really cause problems, except there is nothing in front of axle, such as ice chests or anything else I might throw in at last minute. Might add a small trolling motor on side, by console, and additional battery up front. I have 2, 6gal gas cans at rear now, with one empty. Not a good day for photos, as it is ugly out, with sleet, and freezing rain. Maybe tomorrow. Once again, I thank everyone for their interest, and suggestions.

If you don't like the weather in NC this time of year, wait awhile, and it will change! Sun popped out, and here are some pics001.jpg002.jpg003.jpg

Was confused on what you did. After going back and rereading i see you moved the axle's back, not the winch as i thought. As mentioned above can you just move the boat and winch stand back a little

Re: Increase trailer tongue weight on trailer

Actually, I could, but one, the bunks are really about 3-4 " longer than they were. More of a measurement issue on my part than anything. Bunks are 16' long, same as straights on pontoons. And two, where pontoon is positioned, back trailer support is about 8" forward of closest point of engine. Guess I could move that back support closer to axle, as well as move winch, but could not just move winch alone for fear of hitting support with motor when loading. My thinking is the closer I move the pontoon to the truck, the deeper I have to back into the water to launch.
