I have and old 5 1/2 horsepower Johnson Outboard CD13. I'm looking to increase the horsepower to about 10 or so without boring the heads or changing the rings. Is there anything I can do?

without Boring or changing the rings? hmmmm....

what is the year?
I might have a carb that can get you to 8

How greesy are you? I know it sounds funny but I judge experiance levels on how greesy you get, if your a greese monkey you would be J.B (he told me he used to make custom reed plates! how cool is that!, I wish he could make me some :) )
if when you work on an outboard you come up looking like someone covered you in chocolete you can easly get more horse power :)

Think about it if you doubled the horsepower on
a car motor what would you have to do,how much would it cost how practical would it be to use as a regular motor.
General rule if you want more horsepower buy a motor with more horsepower.
You could end up with a Frankensteins monster.

Those were good old engines. You should be able to sell it to someone wanting a small, reliable fishing engine, and that would help you buy a larger engine.

Sure you can. Get nitros bolted on and go...for about 3 seconds at double the power. The engine will be fried and rods through the block but it will make at least 10hp.

summerslam,. I would hope you will take their advice and NOT try to increase the h/p of this motor, I have one of the exact same model and year, (1956) and I saw one of 1957 vintage sell on ebay for $380 bucks, I gave $75 for mine and did nothing to it, now I do not know what you paid for yours but being original it would seem would be worth more money, by the way just had someone "give" me a 25 horse Merc year unknown, says it only runs on one cylinder, now I am sure if you ask around you can also find a deal or two laying in someones garage, my last "deal netted me a '56 MercElectric start 25E I have invested less than $100 and it purrs like a kitten... basically, be patient, ask around, I can assure there is a deal near you, but ya gotta look! good luck and happy hunting :)

bean and bill your totally right, buy a bigger motor or put nitros on it, and blow it up which will make you BUY ANOTHER MOTOR,
