Increasing Spark Plug Gap

I have read in a lot of posts the suggestion to increase the gap from .030 to .040 to help cut down on plug fouling especially on motors used to troll at low speeds a lot. Are there or could there be any adverse effects to doing so? Hope this doesnt seem like a dumb question, but soon after doing it, my engine has started acting up.

what do you mean with acting up?<br />runs rough??<br />go back to 0.030 and buy a trolling motor.

These recommendations are limited to Johnson and Evinrude engines that are used a lot at low speeds or have experienced fouling, Ralphy.<br /><br />Do not take them to apply to all engines or all spark plugs.

You might want to try somewhere in between. My V4 runs best at .035 gap.
