Can any one let me know where I can get fishing line that is marked in increments? Years ago I had some braided line that was marked every 10 feet. I don't remember if it changed color or was justed marked at the 10' increment, but I would like to find who makes now days. I need to be able to figure fishing depth 20-90 feet, but can't afford to buy reels with built in counters, and I have read that the rod mounted counters are not very good. Figure it would be cheaper to respool with line.
Thanks
Michael

Do this: holding your rod/reel in one hand, strip out the line with your other. Start next to the reel with every strip and extend the pulling hand the same distance (as far as you can reach) every time. Do about 3 or 4 pulls and then measure the length of the line you stripped. Now you know how many pulls it takes to put out a specific length of line. This works with casting/trolling reels as well as spinning reels.

Or: (and this is the method I use) observe how many times the line goes back and forth on the reel (casting/trolling reels) and measure that. Say 8 feet per direction, 10 times = 80 feet. A rough and dirty measurement is that each time line traverses across the face of the reel, 10 feet of line have gone out (and it's semi-accurate on many of my reels). I haven't bothered to figure out a similar method for spinning reels, but there's no reason you couldn't (of course, less line will go out on a full reel than an almost empty one, but, hey, who said fishing was an exact science?)

Now you can still use your favorite line and you also can keep track of how much line is out. Of course, if you're in current or trolling, you have to adjust, but that's a different story....

I've spray painted the line (monofilament) on my trolling rods at X# of feet as a way to keep my trolling spread of lures in a certain pattern.. No problem so far...

ditto on the lead core here .. don't use it much anymore but a good system.

for what its worth - I suggest using mono or florocarbon leaders.
