Can you recommend one to me? Looking for something small (maybe hand held)?

Do I have to have a specific one for the water?

The Garmin eTrex handhelds are inexpensive and work great. Mine is the green eTrex Venture. I also have mine connected to my VHF radio, but you need to buy a special cable from Garmin to do it. I looked at the expensive chart plotter and fish finder type GPS units, but decided against them because I am on small inland lakes, and I don't fish. A handheld is perfect for my purposes, and I am glad I did not buy a more expensive unit.

I have a handheld Cobra gps1000 and a mount that it clips into that holds it right in front of my nose at the helm.

Gonna put another clip mount on the bow for fishing with the same unit.

Huh? why..he' doesnt sound like he's making Gulf trips, plus the operative word here was in-expensive. Look on e-bay ,the smaller units are selling around 2-3 hundred bucks, the handheld units are good for hiking, not so good for marine, unless your inland boating ,there hard to read + dont come with alot of good options like speed over ground..find ship..bearing..easy waypoint entry. Plus a decent one makes navagating to new places a breeze, especially if your boating in the Big Pond.

Any handheld will tell you speed, top speed, average speed, distance traveled, time moving. If you want maps and depth contours you will spend more $. I use my car Garmin GPS and suction it onto the side window with the same kit that came with the unit that I use in the car. It is really just for novelty to see top speed and distance for us since we are in MN on smallish lakes but still neat to have (until it gets wet and is wrecked).

I have the Garmin Oregon 400c and I like it quite a bit. It retails for $499 but I was able to find it on Amazon over the winter at $370. I haven't priced them out since then, so you might be able to do better by now.
