inflatable dinghy motor question

I bought a used Avon inflatable dinghy recently.
Would like to get a motor for it (max 4HP).
Trying to figure out which to get; gas or electric. Seems like with an electric type trolling motor, I could leave motor on dingy when a pivot it up on my swim platform. I believe I would have to remove the gas engine since they don't like laying on their sides.
Would appreciate comments on which might be best choice.
Thanks,
Pete (FL)

Re: inflatable dinghy motor question

Had an electric trolling motor on a fiberglass dinghy once. Not enough power. It would take even more to push an inflatable- especially in a headwind. I've got a 6 HP OB with an internal tank which I store full on its back...cap seems to hold the fuel fine - no leaks. Go for the gas!

P Schmidt: I agree with Jud Hamblett comments, but also wanted to add that there are motor mounts out there that swivel by pulling a pin. Allowing you to have your dingy on the back of your boat and the motor remains verticle. Like Jud said.. go for the gas..

Happy Boating
Link
<I don't mind the voices in my head! Re: inflatable dinghy motor question

Most of all, an electic motor will only run at full power when your battery in compleatly full. the lower the battery charge the slower the max speed. I had an electric now I have a Gas 3HP. It runs just as fast with 1 liter or 1 tablespoon. with elec u have to alway charge battaries and keep exteras.
go for the gas...

Nothing is like a gas motor when conditions are not ideal. Go for da gas.

"MAX 4HP"

Is that the boats rating? Or are you just concerned with the size of the motor. The 3.3 gas motors are lighter than the 4's and should do about the same thing for a small inflateable rated for 4...........

PS The battery for a trolling motor will weigh the same as a 6 or 8 horse engine!
