I bought a used west marine by zodiac SB 285 and took it out and returned quickly with my feet wet. THe base of the transom is totally rotten where it is seamed together. I began to dismantle and found that the wood is really bonded into the rubber joints conected to the pontoons!

First off, how to I remove the old transom from the rubber joints? Heat?

Second, a glue removing agent?

Third, a new adhesive for rebonding?

I need help!

This is a hell of a job to do it by yourself, worst if no experience at all, take sib to a qualified boat repair shop and have it done by professionals, do not apply heat on pvc sibs will ruin rubber joints. Will need solvents to unglue transom, clean unglued parts, 2 part pvc glue, controlled temperature, and repair tools.

1) Yes, you do use heat...But, very carefully has the PVC will melt if you are not experienced.

2) Under no condition would you use MEK or anything else to release the bond. Only use MEK to spot clean the old glue off.

3) 2 part PVC glue

To unglue use methyl-ethyl solvent to remove any glued part along with proper thin spatulas or screwdrivers. Dip spatula border in solvent and make your way with patience and penetrating force through whatever trying to unglue, as it evaporates, re dip constantly spatula as you work your way through. Clean unglued parts with MEK, work in well ventilated area as these solvents are highy toxic, watch out for skin contamination. Good Luck

Re: Inflatable Transom Rotten - How to replace??

Thanks!

I was lucky, no clue what so ever in this transome. Only rubber "tits" going thru the wood transom. I have it removed with no problems at this point. I will however have to glue this back in. 2 part pvc you say? West Marine or other sources? Name brand?

Thanks!

Plainly agree, a hell of a job for a unexperienced boater, take sib to a repair shop, repair should come with warranty.
