Info needed for Chrysler 3.5 HP Air Cooled outboard

Hi I have an old 3.5HP Chrysler outboard, model 301 serial no. 3050 that I am bringing back to life.<br /><br />I need to know what gap to set the ignition points to, what spark plug to fit and what gap to set the plug to.<br /><br />I don't know what year it is - if you can tell me it would be useful!<br /><br />All help much appreciated!<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Dan.

I dont have info for that number but this<br />info covers 66-69 points .020,plug H8J may be superceded but counter person should be able to<br />cross it. set to .030.Fuel ratio is listed as 16:1. 3.6 motors are the same specs. and 24:1 mix.

Model 301 is a 1969

Your model should be a 3601,3602 or 3611 for a '66<br />and 3701,3702 or 3711 for a '67. BTW the compression spec I have is 65-75 psi.

Thanks for the information everyone - very helpful.<br /><br />I'm shocked it's 16:1 ratio! I've been running it on 24:1 because I knew it was old - hope it hasn't damaged it...

The manual I have says to use Texaco Outboard Gear Oil-EP90 but I'll bet Pennzoil would do fine in the LU.

Hi Dan: I have a model 303 which I guess is about the same vintage. Bought it for 5 dollars and resurrected it. Sounds like a cross between a lawnmower and an old WWII aircraft. No water pump, just a scoop tube behind the prop which cools the lower leg of the engine. Looks like a big old aluminum coffeepot. Fun old motor. I have run mine on 24:1 without problems. Pushes my 12ft aluminum pram 6-8mph with just me and a gallon of gas in it. Now it just sits since I got ahold of a British Seagull engine which isn't much faster but a whole lot more unique. Best of luck with your old engine!

Thanks Squeakit !<br /><br />Your descriptions match my engine perfectly! I too brought this little one back to life after years and years of non-use in a shed. It was given to me but looks like it's hardly been used at all.<br /><br />Recently, the engine was laying in my boat (it's the spare) when I was hit by a big wave and the engine ended up being submerged completely in sea-water for around 5 minutes! So it underwent emergency "surgery" on return home to save it - now I think it just needs minor adjustments etc...<br /><br />Thanks to everyone for the replies - I'm really pleased with the response on this great forum.<br /><br />Dan.
