Here is the Model#
Here is the serial# J3666730

I believe it is a 65hp johnson. I need to know the info on it so I can ask if anyone can help diagnose the problem I'm having with it.

I just bought the boat from a friend.

It runs smooth, idles great once warm, but doesn't have power. Carbs are fresh, plugs are fresh, etc..

At one point, it would make the boat plane just fine (15.5ft chrysler commando 151, and the speedo would read ~35mph. Then, it started acting up...it would plane sometimes, and other times it would just barely break 8mph...like it was running on 2cylinders.

ANy ideas? Do these engines have a power pack? Could this be a problem?

Any help is appreciated! THanks!

Shawn

BTW, now it wont plane at all...it will go just a little over idle speed.

I have been reading about similar Johnson problems on here that range from exhaust trouble, to timing, to coil shorts, etc...

I would just like a little direction as to where to start looking.

THanks!

Shawn

2 things come to mind right now. Make sure the timer base is free and moves with the throttle. And make sure all coils have a good clean ground.

where are you located in San Antonio...just noticed that. Good to see there are a few people close to home.

As for the timer base...can you describe it or show a picture? I've built car engines, but this is my first marine attempt.

Coils are a no brainer, I'll be sure to check the connections.

Thanks!
Shawn

Shawn, I'm in Leon Valley by John Marshall High School. The timer base is under the flywheel and is connected to the throttle linkage on the side of your motor. Watch the throttle when you mo and you should be able to locate it. Or, give me a call this afternoon/evening at 533 9069
