information on old Merc. 100hp

Hi guys....

I have an opertunity to replace my 86 Merc. 45hp with a 65 Merc. 100hp. (the boat is rated for 90hp.)
Question #1. does the 100 Merc. wiegh any more than the 80 or 90hp. Mercs. ?
Question #2. Is the old 100 Merc. in line six a good engine? Or is this an engine to stay away from.

All of this is of course dependent on Compression test, condition and how it runs in the water, but why waste my time if this engine was not good from the get go.

a six cylinder 50lbs. more. compression should read around 125lbs and even . you will need a gauge with a flexible hose to get at the lower cylinder. the old mercs will outlast the boats if taken care of. check the internal wires old mercs are prone to rotted wires

another question>> I have heard (from reading in this form)that the dist. (trigger unit) on these old Mercs., are prone to failure and parts are non-existant to spendy if you can find one...

If it is a 1965 yr. it has an automotive old points system - 2 sets of points, 2 coils and 2 ballast resistors.
All these parts are still available, I would also be checking the lower unit for watery oil and shifting.

I myself would find a later model motor as I would not step back this far to repower, especially on that engine as its not a direct charge design and not to efficient on fuel and a lot of shops will not turn a wrench on one that old.

Real old Mercs can be a little spotty on parts support.
