Re: ingnition resistor wire/where is it

i do have the old set
and i gab with a feeler gauge
the condeser is ground to the nut on the points
i have a dwell meter from sears but don,t no how to hook it.

im going to check every thing all over again.

you have been a big help. thanks alot

Re: ingnition resistor wire/where is it

wiring diagram that i have shows that the resistor wire is fed from the electric choke (or dash gage on older models) and could be a white wire. the tan wire is probably from a slave/start solenoid. what brand/kind of points and condensor are you using? i have seen some that are solid and some that are ring shaped. are you getting them from a auto store or marine shop?

Re: ingnition resistor wire/where is it

The points with a hole in them are called 'vented'. It helps then run cooler and gives a longer life (maybe not in this case). Are you aware that points contact surfaces are coated in manufacture to protect the faces from corroding on the shelf? Did you thoroughly clean them before putting them in? Stay with the vented points if you put new ones in.

Chris.........

Re: ingnition resistor wire/where is it

I don't know what not cleaning them will do. I have always cleaned them, just with a clean rag. I suspect the film would start to burn when the points first start operating. This could be part of your problem, maybe, perhaps?
In operation the points are actually switching about 300-400 volts, that's the voltage generated in the primary of the coil when the points open and the electric field collapses. That's the voltage that's transformed by the secondary and fed to the plugs, via the distributor cap.

Chris..............

Re: ingnition resistor wire/where is it

Westdevil,

If your dwellmeter has 2 leads, one black and the other red (that's the usual), then clip the black to a good ground (engine block) and the red to the "-" on the coil (that's the one that goes to the points in the distributor). With the engine running you should be reading between 31 and 34 degrees. Some meters don't have a "4 cyl" scale. You have to double the "8 cyl" reading.

Hope this helps.

i have a 4cyl scale 6cyl 8cyl
i lost the paper work to it, for got how to hook things up.i got it ten years ago from sears.
it does all kinds of things. volts/ohm/dwell /rpm

i will hook it up and check it.

i sure hope this set of points / condensor last

im check every thing possible.trying to make sure every thing is right.

you have been very helpful.

achris60 thanks

Agree with Mercury Blues> I just put my Petronix Ignitor II in and it runs like a lubed clock. The best invention since bread. Not to mention you can put a straight 12 guage wire from starter to coil with no resitor. It wants power!!
