inlet seal?

when i removed my lu merc 850,there was a plastic tube about 2" long slid over the top of the copper line, at the end of the copper line was a seal on the copper tube to pump housing bore. i assume when going back with the lu that the plastic tube is an installation guide to align the seal and copper tube into the pump bore and as the motor raises the plastic tube slides up the copper tube and basically insures the seal fits over the end of the copper tube and seats in the pump bore? could this be why i am having trouble getting my lu back into place?

Re: inlet seal?

Mine is a rubber tube, I have no idea what it is for, when I dropped my lower unit it was above the bend in the tube, but no where near anything useful. I was also wondering what it's for.

Re: inlet seal?

i went to the dealer and they told me the rubber seal goes in the pump bore first then the plastic install tube sits on top of that then it gets slid on the copper tube.sounds like bs to me i think the seal pops into the bore first then the opposite end of the seal slips into the guide tube and then it is slid as an assembly over the copper tube.after its in place the plastic tube just remains on the copper tube.but the dealer says the rubber seal dosent slip inside the tube im not buying it dosent make sense

Yeah, sounds fishy..yours is more then likely a little different then mine. I have a thick rubber ring in my pump with a plastic washer on it that bottoms unto the impeller plate, keeping the copper tube from falling down through and pushing the seal out. The 2" rubber tube does not fit inside the top of my pump housing, so I don't think that's it. My dealer is reluctant to sell me a merc service manual, and the seloc ones cover too many motors. Their motor diagram is missing a few parts from what's in my motors...so I'd prefer to get the proper one...grrr...
