Inline 6 Bleed Restrictors?

Alright, so the story goes I am rebuilding my '85 Mariner/Mercury inline 6 115HP. I got the block machine, honed, cleaned... EVERYTHING! So my first step in the rebuild was to install the stupid little black bleed restrictors. I got a machinest to make up a special punch that was machined to the thickness of the restrictor bores, and then I could drive it into the restrictor holes. So I put some red locktite on the restrictors, and drove them in. Well first thing I noticed was the restrictors were larger than the holes they were suppose to go! Well i drove them in, and they looked pretty squished.
ANYWAYS, a few days go by, and I get my rings on my pistons, and get the whole piston/cranck assembly into the block. Everything looks good, a few small scratches on the cyl. walls from the new rings, but nothing serious. Well guess what! 2 of my restrictors are GONE! Those SOB's popped out! How the heck do you get them in the right way?! I'm soooo furious! Any idea's? First I have to go buy new ones it looks like!!

Where did you buy them from?

I've read different opinions on whether they are really necessary or not. What information do you have on them?

Would it be possible to "punch" the edge of the hole to hold the insert in place?

I baught the bleed restrictors from my local rebuild shop. They are real Qucksilver parts. I used my punch to drive them in, and they squished, and then closed.. its very odd. I've added a pic of what the restrictor looks like after they popped out. They are pointed now, instead of being a plug.

Any idea's Gents?

The general shape indicates to me that something else may still be in the hole. Yes, they are quite important. If you don't have them in, the engine doesn't idle to nicely.

you can use a WD40 straw, cut it into sections and squash the end so it's wider than the rest of the straw and won't fall in. Works MUCH better than the little ones you are trying to use, even if you get them in right they would fall out after a few hours runtime anyway.

I've read that these things tend to fall out over time anyways so why bother with them? Can you not "deform" the opening with a punch to achieve the size of aperture required? What about filling the holes with epoxy then drilling out the required hole diameter?

How are the inserts (WD-40 tubes or otherwise) held in place. Surely a friction fit would not be sufficient enough for long term retention.

Thanks for the Replys everybody! But I'm still going to buy another pack of the quicksliver bleed restrictors, and try to get them in one way or the other.. But I am at a disadvantage because I have my crank assembly already in...
But there isn't anything in the holes Achris, When the block was at the machine shop they did remove them and cleaned it out.. It looks almost like the oringal restrictors were never fully inserted correctly.. or when I punched them in I was at the wrong angle?
I think i'll get a new set, and maybe practice a little bit, measure the angle of the orifice, then use some epoxy on the outside of them when i drive them in place to hold them in?
I dont want to bore out the holes because the pistons are already in place and don't want anything to get into the cylinders

Hi there trying to open your post about bleed restrictors the mod you do. Says I don’t have permission to open could you send it to me. Got a late 80s Merc 60 hp. 3 cyl 2 carb.
