inline 6 wiring harness

Came across this while trouble shooting.

Doesn't look like something the factory did. Power is tapped off of the starting solenoid then t's towards the stator and back to the harness towards the boat.

There is also a a wire from the harness that has a butt connector on it. Was this supposed to go somewhere? Best I can tell it is white or gray with no stripes.

Advice?

Those inlines did not come with inline fuses. That is an add on.

The colors of the 70s inlines were: Red was unfused +12VDC, White was ignition +12VDC,used to power the switchbox for distributor ignition, Brown was tach signal, yellow was starter solenid, grey was choke solenoid, orange or salmon was ign killer for ADI ignition.

The stator battery charging wires are yellow, and ran thru the full wave rectifier to charge battery.

i found the same on my motor previous owner rigged it up something bad. took a while to get it rewired but got it and my engine runs great. keep trouble shooting and other websites on iboats show wiring diagrams.

okay, found the end of the wire. It starts at the + terminal of the rectifier and goes into the wiring harness.

Is the + side of the rectifier where 12v dc comes from?

I tested the rectifier and one side is fried. The tach worked but the battery would not charge.

Would you assume that the rectifier (or rectifier and stator) went bad and they added this tap to get power from the battery into the harness?

Rectifier wires should not be fused. If the fuse blows, it takes out the rectifier. The +DC pole on the rectifier is where the charging voltage comes from. The boat is negative ground, and the fourth side of the rectiier is internally grounded.

Remove that inline fuse. If you need to have a fuse, put it on the red wire to the boat harness, and make sure you have a wire from the +12VDC side of the starter solenoid (thick battery wire) to the rectifier +dc pole.

Thats a new style wiring harness (ADI ignition) and it does have a factory inline fuse(not the one shown). The fuse should draw power from constant 12+ suppled from soleniod and to rectifier and this supplys power to control box.
