Hello and I apologize in advance for wasting room on your server here at Iboats.
i am at a 9 month relationship with a clean first real boat and it was just about the happiest day of my life now I can't seem to overcome every new issue that pops up on my own, searching others threads.
I've replaced or rebuilt all But power head .
Motor wouldn't shut off yesterday, always had before .
I had just installed Stator 398-4793
I never had any stator installed when a ran it in yard before.
I once had the control box apart and connection were fairly recently made, well except black sooty grease he used to coat some stacked connections .
Looking at wire diagrams feeling like the D wire might not be grounded .
I hate electrical so before I must I check.
Even with key out when I look for spark at 0 * I hear a awful fizzling sound from in the cap.
I can't even emagine the joy of getting her out around the jetty.

Idle was always high I'd been fine tuning that. yesterday she took three more attempts than average to start and idle was a good amount lower , about 1000 , good.
Weird knock , it would kinda make whole engine shutter to side, .....

O yeah first time I got it running months ago it would shock the snot outa me when I turned the cap , not anymore just impossible to not have new issue, timing was a challenge due to the fact the timing marks were worn. I watched a video guy with 75 1150 who shows by measuring off of first dot stamped on flywheel your 5 &21 degrees.

Tested and got 12 volts at starter solenoid and switch box with the key out.
No wonder there's a lighting storm under my cap at pickup points .
New ign switch on the menu .

Well since there are major differences between a 1978 engine and a 1979 engine it would be nice to know which one is being discussed. Does your engine have a distributor and one ignition coil? Or does it have six ignition coils?

Correct looks like 78 it was the last year before multiple coils and switch boxes .
Just one lonely coil and distributor.

So the problems are...

1) won't shut off
2) knocking sound

When did you have the control unit apart?
You say timing was a challenge. What exactly did you adjust? and by how much?
You say idle was about 1000. what was it before?
You reference something you call 'cap' what is cap?

I am getting ahead of myself, the rough knock at idle I believe I'll sort out on Monday . Before when it ran and shut off it was smooth but at 2000 rpm at idle , ouch. I retarded timing by turning distributor cap to get it down and I turned it as far as it would go toward the idle stop screw.
I connected the tach via the plug wires comming from my control box to no avail, it's the original tach on my 79 thunderbird.
I took control unit apart today to get a heads up on what I'll be tangl d up in.
5 terminal ignition switch , hard to find online.
Not shutting off this just cracked me up, like poldergiest came aboard .
