inline merc 170

I am looking at a 1986 galaxy 226 with a merc inline 4 170, the man has not statrted it in 13 years he told me the motor and sterndrive were working great before he shut it down. I do not know if the 170 is a good motor or not anthing to look for? The boat and trailer is only $1000 and he told me he only used a dozen times. I do not want to dump alot of money in this

13 years? Ask him what he did to it before he shut it off. Did he set it up for storage (fogging the cylinders, drain all the water from the block, etc) ? Some engines sit well for a long time and start right up, others don't do as well. The outdrive is going to need to be serviced. Possibly new boots, new impeller and the like.

That sounds like a reasonable response Lotsa new parts from drying up and dry rot.

Will cost very little to throw some gas & a battery in it & try it on the water, then make a decision based on findings.
