Re: Inline mercry 1500 carb problems

Wired, I checked my OEM service manual. It doesn't have your exact motor, but it has 4 and 6 cylinder distributor ign timing and synch. One of the pictures shows the bump (or nib) on the distributor pully and on the pully bracket. They look to line up when the cast arrow is oriented properly, but the narrative makes no mention of them. I didn't even know my motor had them....

I'm not sure why those bumps are there but if I time the motor off those its all jacked up and theres no way it will run reliably or that I can adjust the carb or timing linkage to compensate . I did get it back together last night with the arrow pointing in the general direction of the 3 dots but the timing adjustments are in a reasonable position now. It might work. Still wont idle under 6 degrees BTDC at 1000 on the muffs though but I do have the idle screws out 1 1/4 turns. May be related to the fiber reeds . I'll try it out in the river today.

You have been using the brass collar on the distributor to adjust the idle pickup timing, right?

No idle adjustment collar should be brass, with plastic fingers to push the top carb lever open and two 3/16" stainless bolts holding it in place. The only steel item is the piece that holds the distributor cap to the distributor. The cap fits only one way, right?

Its zinc chromated steel ( iridited ) . Similar process to galvanizing but has a gold hue. Looks like brass . Its not.

Cap only fits one way. Took it down to the river yesterday but just fired it up on the trailer. 40 mph gusts and way to windy to go on the water . Still wouldnt idle in the water for a flip even at 8 BTDC and wouldnt transition to the main circuit. Carbs open up and motor just goes blllaaaaaahhhhh at 1500 RPM.

Thats making some big assumptions there. The first pickup he has me passing 3-4 degrees BTDC at which point the first pickup arm should be touching the throttle lever. No way in he!! I can idle under 3 degrees in or out of the water unless I'm a half turn out on the idle mixture screws on the muffs. Idling at a few degrees ATDC... forget about it and thats what the book calls for. I spent hours last night tearing carbs apart and making float adjustments thinking MAYBE I'm too high in the float dept and its going too rich. Then I blew the cylinder cover gasket and spent the rest of the night tearing that apart.
