This question has to do with the actual horsepower of the inlines pre- and post- propshaft ratings: How does the 70s 1500 compare with the later propshaft rated 115 of the 80s overall? Has anyone owned and had experience with both (Clams, I know you're out there)?

Thanks for any thoughts. Starting to get the fever again as the days get longer.

Re: Inline question

That early engine was not rated at the propshaft.
The later engine would have been since about 1984.

However, Mercury especially, but other builders have played with the ratings for years. All trying to get a marketing advantage. (Why does our 150 outrun your 150? because its a 160...? )

Re: Inline question

Would a mid 70s "150" produce more HP than a later propshaft rated 115? I'm guessing that the 1500 would have bigger jets?

Re: Inline question

Yes the mid-70's 1500 is stronger than the late 115. The late 115 is about a 135 at the crank, the 1500 is a true 150 at the crank. Lot more than jets different. And HP aside the late 115 is a more stable platform for the long haul. The 1500's are a bit "piston happy" if not treated carefully.

-W

Re: Inline question

Thanks - I think I'm clear on it now. So, if I hear you correctly, I can keep my 1500 around for more of the "long haul" by setting/keeping the timing at no more than 21 deg. BTDC, avoiding prolonged periods at WOT, using at least 89 octane, changing the impeller every year, and using high quality oil @ say 40/1?

Yes.... and decarb it every year.

Or just use fully synthetic oil and never have to decarb and also gain 100-200 extra RPMs @ WOT...

(Just thought that my post has not generated enough interest thus far hehehe..)

Wow! No takers on that claim and no resulting skirmishes! I guess all the oil questions have been settled..
