Tomorrow I am going to be doing an inspection and survey on a 2007 Mako 284 I am about to buy, I think I am getting a great deal, but I am a bit skeptical. I am looking for recommendations on what to look for. The boat has 2 2018 Yamahas F225s with 240 hours. I am buying it from the second owner that bought it in 2011. The boat has an unusual history; the owners are sailors that own businesses in Puerto Rico and used the boat as a taxi from east of Puerto Rico to Tortola in the BVIs where they keep their sailboat. East bound this is about 60 miles upwind trek, with 20 miles or so of typically very rough head seas. West bound is all downhill.

Thru the years the boat was kept with the bare basics to perform its point to point transportation duty, and when something stopped working they would just remove it, it has no toilet, no windlass, trim tabs dont work, no raw or fresh water pumps, no music, many of the latches need fixing, loose hinges, not a single gas shock, etc. On the other hand, most of the time the boat was kept out of the water and in an indoor dry stack. Externally it looks with little wear, cushions are all original, gel coat is in good shape, and little sun damage.

Researching online and talking to a couple of locals, this seems to be a good solid boat, with fresh engines, that can handle offshore duties well, at a really good price. My plan is to fix all the basic stuff and add all the goodies at my own pace. Plan to use it for fishing, diving and family trips to USVIs and BVIs. I have experience rebuilding sailboats, have done glass work, wood work, electrical and engine rebuilds in my younger years.

Anything I should be aware of? I searched online and only found 1 bad story, which is nothing for boat that was produced from 2005 to 2021.

thanks!

There's a bunch of Mako sites on Facebook, that would be your best bet in getting any feedback on a particular model .
