In another post (spark plugs - 5 dirty, 1 clean???) there were comments on the need to check the exhaust flappers. I want to check mine.

I have a 1988 OMC cobra with a 5.0L GM engine. I have a SELOC manual, but it does not show the flappers. My guess is that they are after the exhaust manifold end cap and after the rubber hose that connects to the end cap.

Am I correct? Can anyone help pinpoint it for me?

Don S,

Thanks. My drawing from SELOC shows that pipe, but does not show the flapper.

How hard is it to get to the flapper? It is 11:23 PM now, and the boat is under cover so I cannot go out to see for myself.

Jack,

The easiest way to check them is to remove the elbows, #48 in the diagram. It's an easy job to then just remove the rubber boots and check the flapper. Elbows should be removed and check every other year on the regular maintenance anyway.

Chris.............

archris,

Seems confusing. Does part 48 have 2 flappers, one on each end? Otherwise it looks like you have to look around some bends to get to the flapper shown.

Re: Inspecting exhause flappers

There is an exhaust shutter on each side of the exhaust Y. They are there to slow down (NOT stop completley ) the flow of water back into the exhaust manifold from waves hitting the stern of the boat when the engine is not running.
They may get burned up and fall out during an overheat, and can end up in the drive and restrict exhaust.
Are you having a problem that could be attributed to the exhaust shutters?

Re: Inspecting exhause flappers

Please forgive a newbie, I don't want to hijack this thread, I just have a quick question with regards to the diagram; what is the name of #60?

I have a very old merc 120 I/O, and there is a stiff rubber piece that looks alot like #60 (same shape, same location) that has some small tears in it. This allows hot exhaust water to spray into the boat and towards the carb. It isn't much, the bilge pump more than keeps up with it, but I imagine I should do something to it.

And, if I'm not being too pushy, how much would one of these puppies cost, and where would I order it?

thanks in advance-
Bill
Minnesota

Volvo outdrives ( which are the same as cobras from '95 and up) are no longer using shutters. I read a service bulletin on this lately. Seems that they cause more problems than they help.

mnguy, I would replace those quick, water on hot metal not good and neither is CARBON MONOXIDE. my OMC book lists those parts as "hose". Im not sure how much but,I replaced my exhaust bellows for around $30. So I guess $60 for you.

mnguy,

Please start a new thread with your problem. Mention in the opening post all of the following information.

1. make and horsepower of engine
2. year of engine or serial number of engine, both if you have them
3. exactly what the problem is and what you have done to try and fix it.

When we have all this infomation, then we can give you accurate advise.

Chris...........

Re: Inspecting exhause flappers

Don S,

Thanks for the help. To answer your question, I am not having any problem right now. But I don't know when any of the exhaust manifold parts have been replaced or checked.

My quesitons are because I want to do some preventative maintenance.
