You will need to use a bracket clamped with one of the water cover screws.

Removing my reply. The guy asked a question and I answered it. Didn't mean to start WW3

Re: install a temp guage

he doesnt really need to drill all the way to water , does he?

the sender ports in my motor are blind holes...the sender just reads the temperature of the head metal...not that of the water!!!

so a good spot might be between the cylinders of a head...

isnt there a boss available on most motors?

Do not drill a brass sender into a water jacket in an aluminum block/top unless you want to create a real corrosion problem. Just use a contact sender as intended by the manufacturer. Secondly the water jacket in the head is not filled with water and a 'normal' temp sender will not give correct readings.

A contact sending unit just touches the metal and therefore the temperature of the water inside. No need to drill aANYTHING.
if you place it in mast normal cases like on a head use a z bracket that will come w sensor kit.
I have same motor. If you do the above you only know the temp. of that head. I came up w a solution that gives a very accurate reading of the average off all heads.
Mount the sensor on the thermostat housing between the heads and because the water flows from heads to t stat this give an average temp.
It is very accurate and gives the exact reading i get from IR thermometer. See picture.

Re: install a temp guage

I made mine from the Z bracket that came with sensor so it was already tapped with proper threads. I bent it so that it would do what picture shows then cut the lower end to fit around the center bolt of housing creating a "U" shape with thin sides to fit in between housing recess.
