Re: install of underwater lighting

Lime4x4, I was just about to go to autozone and see if I could water proof some LED driving lights. I'm going to order these instead.

I just need to decide if I'm going to go with white or blue. I really do like how the blue looks!

Re: install of underwater lighting

Why did they say "No Way?"

Background - We have a pontoon boat. Lake of the Ozarks is notorious for it's number of large cruisers driven by idiots who think that everyone else has to get out of their way. I wanted to add strings of LED's, colored appropriate for the sides. i.e. red on port, green on starboard, and white on the rear.

At our local February boat show, I talked to several WP officers about my plans. All said that the only lights that are legal when underway at night are the "normal" navigation lights. So I asked what about just a horizontal string of white lights along my stern and explained my concern being run over by the big azz cruisers that can't see 100 feet in front of them. Nope. You do and we'll write you a ticket for displaying improper navigation lights at night.

When anchored out, their only concern is displaying the anchor lights. One can add any other lights, where ever one wants, but one must also have the anchor light lit.

So I ask, there are several large dinner cruise boats out at night and they have all kind of lights displayed. Their answer - They are big and slow so it is not an issue. Huh? Wait a minute. I am small and slow. It would seem that I would need more illumination than a big honkin party boat to keep me from being run over. No dice.

Soooo, I do have a 2 million candle power spot light that I will take, if and when, we go out at night. When one of them big azz cruisers comes up behind me, in my wake, and looks like they don't see me, I'll let them know that I am there. Not in their eyes, but above them enough to let them know that I don't like to be tailgated.

Those pics look pretty sweet. Always wondered how much light those put out. I was about to order some of the 4-chip superflux LEDs to replace the bulbs in my fore and aft deck lights that are burned out. I've seen the 4-chip LEDs before and they are pretty bright.

Re: install of underwater lighting

Sorry to bring up such an old thread, but I was wondering how these held up? Any issues?

I plan on installing a set of these on the back of my transom. I'm either going to drill a hole for the wire directly behind the lights through the transom and use some 3m 5200 marine adhesive or I might run the wire up above the water line before drilling through the transom. I'm also going to add a dual battery set up this season. Any thoughts?

I as well have seen this thread and was wondering how well these particular lights have held up. They are much cheper than anything else I have seen on the web. I want some lights too but I cannot really justify spending hundreds of dollars for them. Hopefully we can get some answers.

Cool thanks for the info.

I have been looking at them for a little while. You can buy several of them for cheaper than one individual light.

I think 6 is the magic number.

If you buy more 3 or more you save $2 per light.

Has anyone just installed 2 lights? I was hoping to see some pics of just two installed instead of 4.

Look's awesome, I read somewhere that the lights are also good for attracting fish, and luck with that?

It's illegal to use lights for fishing in Minnesota, except for lures that have lights in them. I'm thinking this stuff would get you a visit by the DNR...assuming that there was anyone around, which is unlikely on most lakes here.

In my part of the world. The dnr are only on the water during daylight hours. But i never really looked into if they were legal or not

Reminds me of ground effects lights some people put on cars. Where do you put the chrome spinners on the boat and the oversized exhaust? :D

I don't have any pics of night time use. We use them when we are skinny dipping.
I got them from here.:) .http://www.thefountainguys.com/lit_solar.php

I like lime4x4's lights better. :)
