Install water separator ???

Recently bought a used 1996 Baylinder 1700 with 1996 Force 120 HP engine. Currently trying to breath "fresh life / better life" into this old technology engine. Or, this engine gets dumped with a different engine... Regardless of which Outboard engine works best, should I install a water separator device? If so, which make / model (assume different sizes for different flow rates) should I focus on for a 120/115 HP engine?

Ayuh,... A canister style fuel filter is a Plus on any boat, with any motor...

They're all pretty much the same,... Mercruiser uses a different thread size, 'n pitch than the ole OMC units,...

Not sure 'bout the 1s used by Volvo...

The aftermarket 1s sold by iboats will work just fine in yer application...

Didn't know if some engines like one brand and other engines like a different brand - depending on engine size. And, if some folks like the visual glass bowl kind or they like the steel canister design. Also didn't know if some folks leave existing inline gas filter with their water / fuel seperator unit or remove the little inline gas filter as well. Sounds like I simply visit my local boating parts store and ask for a 3/8" inlet "generic" Fuel Water seperator unit, bolt on and "away we go". Thanks for your feedback.

You want 1/4" NPT threads in the filter housing. The hose barb fittings will be 1/4" NPT on one end, and what ever size fuel hose barb on the other. Could be 5/16" or 3/8" ID hose.

Fuel/water separator after the tank and before the primer bulb. Note: No glass bulb on inboards. Inline filter just before the carb/s.

As far as I know, there are no separators with clear bowls that are approved for inboard use. Too much risk of damage to the bowl, and having it spill lots of raw gasoline.

I think he is refer to this style....

It is Clear but NOT Glass!

Note:Clear Bowls: Use for outboard and above deck installations.
Metal Bowls: USCG regulations require the use of flame resistant metal bowls below deck.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. Yes, clear bowl is what I had in mind - for our boat's OB engine.. Thus, I can see if the bottom container is holding junk, and I can drain it out (when needed). With steel sides container, one cannot see if its insides are dirty or clean. Thanks for the picture... I'll be buying this clear bowl device for our OB engine this spring. Or, my wife can buy it for our boat (fo its own Chirstmas present - LOL!!!).

After comparing the availability and cost of clear bowl systems, I bought a more common steel filter canister system. And, best price was from iboats. re: Fuel Water Separator Kit for Mercruiser, Suzuki Outboard, Johnson, Evinrude, McCulloch, Scott Atwater, Volvo Penta, OMC Sterndrive Cobra, Yamaha Outboard, GLM 24950, Tempo 170101 - Sierra 18-7852-1 - iboats

Hopefully, this item will work for my Force 120 HP OB engine. Only time will tell.... Thanks for everyone's help... (giant smile).

You want a 10 micron filter. The one you bought is twice that (21 micron).

Found... "Gasoline Fuel filter kits are designed to remove particulate matter and water from marine gasoline fuel systems. 21 micron filters are appropriate for most carburated style marine engines. For high performance fuel injected engines, finer 10 micron filters are more commonly recommended."

Since 1996 Force 120 HP OB engine uses 2 x carbs, 21 micron partical filtering is "good enough" (for my current needs). For next year canister replacement (since one is suppose to replace canister every 12 months), I'll buy the 10 Micron filter canister then. Currently, the boat has NO Fuel / Water seperator. Thus, I suspect its very rough running engine is from too much water within its gas. Even having optional 1 x 21 micron system with Filter / Water seperation is a huge improvement from its base factory build.

Thanks for explaining differences between 10 and 21 microns... Next filter canister will 10 microns....
