i installed two switches on my 1975 500 4cyl merc. one for of and on to the switchbox (white-red). and on the start switch (yellow-red) it worked great. but now for some reason when i turn it to the off position the motor stays on. the only way i can kill it is to manually close the choke. is there some wire i need to ground out to one of my switches? i'm open to any opinions. :D

Youu still have power to the white wire or it would kill, read the wiring diagram you got last week.

Re: installed momentary pushbutton switch to start. now it wont kill in the off posi

okay just out of curiosity i took these steps when i got home from work.

1. i totally disconnected the white-red switch. pushed the button. it fired right up no problem as usual. still i cant kill it.

2. disconected the whole harness from the switches and crossed the two wires red-yellow and again started right up. pulled them apart. still kept running.

3. disconnected the negative battery cable while running. still no kill.

4. disconnected the positive battery cable while still running. now the motor isnt hooked up to twelve volts. still no kill

5. pulled the harness plug out of the side of the motor while still running. take a guess????? still no kill!!!! i'm out of answers. the only thing i can do is pull the motor cover off and manually choke it because my elec. choke isnt working. any comments or thoughts would be greatly appreciated as i am at my ropes end with this thing. it is the model with two stators. one for the mag. and one for the flywheel alternator. mabey one of my wires could be shorted out??? mabey something is not grounded out right??? please help me out. thanks everyone for your thoughts.
