I picked up a Rule-Mate 500 automatic bilge pump for next to nothing at a yard sale. It's really smaller (gph wise) then I want, but it'll do for now. I eventually want to put in a 1100-2000gph pump. The 500gph uses a 3/4" hose, and the larger ones use 1-1/8".

My question is; is there a negative side to installing a 1-1/8" thru-hull, with a reducer (to 3/4") while I'm using the 500gph? I figure that way, when I do get the larger pump, I won't have to either cut a new hole, or try and widen the smaller hole for it.

I don't want to keep the 500 once I get the larger one. I already have an 800gph, which will stay along with the bigger one.

Short answer is no.

There is no restriction because your flow goes from 3/4" to 1 1/8". There is no reduction in flow because the 1 1/8" fitting is at the end of your line. Your fine.

Exactly what I thought. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything obvious. :)
